You can simulate 5V TTL or open collector outputs and frequency selection can be based of an analog voltage input or fixed frequencies that you can index through.

Application Examples

Encoders are used to track the angular position of a shaft or in some cases a linear position of an actuator.  You will find them connected to servo motors, some regular motors to precisely track speed, and in other motion control applications where precise positioning is required.  Most will have an A channel, a B channel, and a Z marker.  The A and B channels will give off a certain number of pulses per revolution or PPR which will be evenly divided along the 360 degree rotation of the encoder.  The A and B will be offset so that one will pulse before the other.  For example if you have a 1000 PPR encoder, then the A channel will pulse 1000 times per revolution and the B channel will pulse 1000 times per revolution.  If you were rotating clockwise then the A pulse would come before the B pulse but if you were rotating counterclockwise then the B pulse would come before the A pulse.  This allows you to know which way the shaft is rotating.  The direction of rotation along with the pulses can be used to calculate the precise position.  The Z marker will give one pulse per revolution, letting you know the precise absolute angle of the shaft.
