Ethernet is used to connect Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).

The most common industrial Ethernet protocol is EtherNet/IP.  It uses the popular Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) which is also used by DeviceNet, ControlNet and CompoNet.  Common uses for this are PLC to PLC communications, PLC to remote I/O communications, and PLC to HMI communications using implicit and explicit messaging.
